Android DFIR field reference

Read an Android phone like evidence.

The Android forensics map

Nine areas cover the evidence that matters on a handset, from getting the data out to building the timeline. Each links to artifact pages and in-depth guides.

workflow

From seized handset to a defensible timeline

The same five phases apply whether you have a bugreport, an ADB backup or a full file system extraction.

  1. 01

    Isolate

Keep the phone powered and isolated from networks. Record its lock state (BFU or AFU), build and battery level.

  2. 02

    Extract

Pick the deepest level you can justify: logical and bugreport first, then full file system through an agent, root or exploit.

  3. 03

    Parse

Open the SQLite databases with their WAL files, the protobuf and XML system files, and each app's own storage.

  4. 04

    Correlate

Normalise every epoch to UTC and merge messages, calls, app usage, location and installs into one timeline.

  5. 05

    Report

State the extraction level, Android version and what each artifact can and cannot prove on that build.
